SCENAR, Jessica Palin

Scenar Therapy is a holistic form of treatment, it is non invasive and responds uniquely to each individual.
The S.C.E.N.A.R., Self-controlled Energo Neuro Adaptive Regulator was developed in Russia. Dr. Karasev and a team of other doctors started to develop SCENAR in the late seventies.  After creating the Tens machine and recognising limitations, Dr Karasev put his mind to developing a device that could enter into a ‘dialogue’ with the body.  They were the first people to develop repeatable therapeutic treatment using electrical signals to stimulate the immune system.
With a hand held device gentle electrical impulses, the parameters of which are designed to emulate the body’s own neuro impulses are transmitted through the skin to the nervous system. According to Dr. Alexander Karasev the device was designed as an ‘informational analogue of a living system’. It is a bio feedback device. It ‘talks’ to the body in its’ own language, allows the body to talk back and encourages it to find its’ own healing pathway.
Treatment protocols have been developed, over many years, by several Russian doctors including  Dr Ravenko and Dr Yuri Gorfinkel .  Dr. Ravenko based his treatment protocols on a deep understanding of Chinese Medicine. He claimed there were few illnesses that SCENAR could no treat. The practice is constantly developing as understanding of the potential of the treatment grows.
In general terms the SCENAR device influences the adaptive processes of the organism and helps to harmonise them. Our bodies, minds and spirits are constantly ‘adapting‘ to external and internal influences.  Some of these cause stress which in turn creates an adaptive process that may present itself as dis-ease.  For this reason Scenar is described as an adaptive regulator. In response to SCENAR impulses the nervous system releases neuro and regulative peptides (chemicals) into the bloodstream. As a result homeostasis or equilibrium is gradually and gently restored.
The ability of the Scenar signal to stimulate the release of neuro peptides is one of the reasons why it is so effective in such a broad range of disorders - but this is not the absolute answer.  Like all holistic therapies it is probably a combination of factors including the triangular relationship between the device the therapist and the client.
By applying the electrode of the device directly onto skin and observing both the reactions of the device and the skin, the practitioner can identify the most significant ‘asymmetry’ on the skin. An asymmetry is identified by a difference in colour, texture, sensation or by observing a difference in the behaviour of the device on the body. What goes on inside our bodies will be reflected on our skin. (as within – so without)
Dr.Irina Kossovskaia is quoted as saying “The skill of the SCENAR therapist and the very essence of any SCENAR procedure is in finding the smallest possible asymmetry on the skin.” She continues “it reflects the pathology which at this particular moment is the body’s priority. That’s where the body’s attention is, that’s what it is trying to fix right now.  Supplementing the body’s efforts versus redirecting them is apparently, the key to SCENAR efficiency”
The practice of SCENAR is continually developing and growing. It is registered in the UK by the British Standards Institute for the relief of pain.  In Russia and Bulgaria, where there is a wealth of research, it is recognised for many other conditions.
Though the philosophy of some of the practice is not new, the development of such an informative device is.  Combining ancient Chinese knowledge of energetic points in the body, reflex zones and meridians with such fine technology is indeed an
inspiring way forward into the ever developing art of healing.
It is a great privilege to work with clients in this way and immensely rewarding to see the benefits that SCENAR treatment can bring.

Jessica Palin has been practising Scenar for 5 years.  She is also a Music Psychotherapist and Professional Musician.

THOUGHTS ON CO-HOUSING, Andrew Eastaugh

Which comes first:  the chicken or the egg? Or in this case the people or the project? We have a seed, but are not too sure what it might spawn, so we need other people who might be interested to be co-instigators.  The seed is as follows:
There is an interesting relationship between creativity and healing.  While it is true that many artists are goaded on by a sense of incompleteness or flaw; like the grit in the oyster that produces the pearl; it is also true that health and wholeness, which come from the same source, can also be necessary for the creative energy.  While the very business of creatively working to understand our experience of life can be immensely healing.  It is this latter aspect that underpins the use of arts in therapy, particularly for mental health.
In community people rub shoulders in the act of every day existence and neighbourliness so there is the opportunity for the fertilization of ideas without any overt organisation.  Unfortunately in much of modern life we live and work in separate places, isolating various components of our lives to specific times and spaces.
So how would it be if there was a place where artists/craftsmen could live and work in proximity to each other and to those working for healing and wholeness? Perhaps there could also be a space for short term visitors, maybe an artist who needs to recharge his or her batteries; to have a change of influence and stimulus.
Next to a beautiful thatched church, one and a half miles from the unspoilt Suffolk coastline, and on the edge of our garden, is a piece of land [approx ½ acre] with a 7,500 sq ft shed that has been used as a workshop and for storage.  Its condition is poor and repair uneconomic, the surrounding land is untidy and the whole site is crying out for a creative use.
Our idea is to try and combine creativity and a sense of community with:
Healing, restoration & revitalisation.
Ecological sustainability.
However we are also aware of the following requirements:
To be practical, well grounded, financially and socially viable
To get planning permission.
        What might work?
A group of 3-5 live-work units with some shared facilities, housing individuals, couples or small families with an interest and experience/skills to offer in the worlds of creativity and healing, plus a preparedness to live in a co-operative way. The word “co-housing” comes to mind, in the sense of a co-operative ethos that also understands the need for independence as well as the benefits of joint ventures. We feel that most of this would be for permanent occupation, but some space might be available to let for people who needed a break and wanted to work creatively themselves as well as be part of the small community. This might also provide an opportunity for some income generation through B&B.
Shared facilities: Garden, community barn [probably at later date due to costs]? eco plant [heating, wind turbine? Sewage treatment].
Buildings need to be as sustainable and green as possible but also low cost, using local materials that harmonise with the surroundings but are also innovative. Here is a sketch that one interested friend has produced as a sample of what the main building could look like.
The next step is to get a group of people who might be interested in this project as possible future occupiers. As this is an evolving idea and we don’t know the answers, we are looking for others who might be interested.
